Hello! I’m a thinker, researcher, teacher, mentor and supporter of action on ecological and environmental issues. I am based in South Yorkshire, having moved to Sheffield in 2003 to study for my PhD at The University of Sheffield. You can find out a lot more about my academic career on my CV page.
Before Sheffield, I spent six years in London, first studying for my undergraduate degree in Planetary Sciences at UCL and then a masters in Environmental Science at Birkbeck, while also working in my first job in urban and community regeneration in Forest Gate, East London.
In London I met my wife, Lizzie. She joined me in Sheffield in 2006, having started her first career in Speech and Language Therapy in Ipswich. She has worked in Rotherham for 20 years, for much of that time in Rotherham NHS but now as an ordained CofE priest. We have two children who are born and raised Sheffielders.
After 23 years in Higher Education, working internationally on research problems from environmental radioactivity to nanotechnology, my passion and mission is to support local communities, businesses and organisations to understand and prepare for the future in our rapidly changing world.
As the philosopher Bruno Latour put it, we are coming back down to Earth from the spaceship of Modernity. But the Earth has changed. Do we know where we are landing? Do we know how to survive there?
I’m originally from East Kent, on the coast just west of Margate.
